The SickSpits Bring A Comedy Slam To UC Davis

By Stephanie Vera on January 14, 2013

On Thursday, January 11th, UC Davis SickSpits put on their very first comedy show at 7:30PM in the Student Community Center.  The SickSpits is a Davis-based collective of spoken word artists.  They host open mic nights on the first Tuesday of every month in Griffon Lounge at the Memorial Union or at the newly opened Student Community Center.

Every first-Tuesday of the month students and community members visit Davis bringing exuberant energy and cutting creativity to the stage.  The group seeks to share their personal stories in a powerful way to create more accepting, understanding and profound communities.

While they normally express their talent in the form of poetry slams and raps, they decided to do something a little different last week and invited comedians to the stage.   The comedians had two chances to compete against each other and a winner was determined by five judges chosen from the audience.  I was one of the lucky 5 students selected to be a judge and granted a VIP front row seat!

The Student Community Center was full of students eager to see their peers’ talents.  Third-year student, Henry Lam, said “I really like the comedy concept.” Another student, Angeline Hoang, said “I don’t really know what to expect.”

Altogether the show was a huge success!  Comedian, Michael Taber won the competition; Austin Abshire came in second place and Jaclyn Weiand came in third place! It is a challenge to make people laugh, but every performer was able to get a chuckle at least out of everyone in the audience.  The SickSpits also invited guests to perform for their usual open mic sequence and Jonathan Yu performed a rap called “The Chi Spell Song” which had everyone dancing in their seats.

After the show I was able to interview Benjamin Trinh, a UC Davis student and member of the SickSpits.  He thoroughly enjoyed the performances and stated “I was just ecstatic at the turnout we received tonight. It was SickSpits’ first ever Comedy Slam, so we didn’t know what to expect; all we knew was that we were going to put on a show and give everyone a great time. Definitely the participants and the people who came out to support, should get all of the credit. SickSpits just puts it together because it’s something we love.”
