Job Description
Our family is seeking a home caregiver for Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 8am until 8pm for our 41 year-old son Jake, who suffers from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease (like Stephen Hawking). He lives in downtown Sacramento, near the Capitol. His 6 year old daughter lives with her mother but stays with him every other weekend from Friday at 5:30pm until Sunday at 4pm. During most hours when his daughter isn't there, you"ll have plenty of time for study, etc.
ALS is a neuromuscular disease that is terminal. Jake is severely disabled, but he has a bright mind, a healthy sense of humor and an inspiring, life-affirming spirit. He requires a wheelchair full-time but thanks to exceptional technology and his ability to use it, he is able to take care of some of his needs. He appreciates all the care that has come his way.
Specific Need:
Jake has a live-in caregiver who looks after him from 8pm until 8am, seven days a week, and another caregiver who takes care of him during the week Tuesday-Friday. He has immediate family in the Bay Area. He needs someone to join his team Saturday-Monday, 8am-8pm.
In the morning, he needs assistance from a caregiver to take his medications, prepare his breakfast and feed him. He also needs help using the bathroom, but he has an easy to operate Sit-to-Stand lift that makes it a simple task. He also requires meal preparation and feeding for his dinner. Light housekeeping is a plus. On the weekends when his daughter is staying with him, his caregiver will need to help him play with his daughter, take them both on neighborhood outings and, ideally, drive her home to Fair Oaks on Sundays.
Qualifications and compensation:
We are seeking a caregiver who is experienced with both handicapped care and is also comfortable with child care oversight. Someone who is a non-smoker, CPR/First-Aid trained and fully vaccinated for COVID and has a driver's license. IHSS certification is also preferred, or at minimum, a willingness to apply for it. (We can help you with this.) Having some scheduling flexibility is a plus as there are needs at times for night and day coverage. Our son and his team will establish a schedule with you that takes into consideration time off and vacations. The salary will be fair and generous, ideally IHSS comp, combined with a meaningful financial supplement, to be negotiated. IHSS requires a copy of your social security card, your driver's license, and if you are not a resident, a work permit or green card.
Despite his illness, Jake is a remarkable man and a loving father to his six year-old. We are seeking a big-hearted caregiver who will enthusiastically join in partnership with Jake's caregiving team and loving family.
