Generation Y Picks The Top 10 Christmas Songs!

By Stephanie Vera on December 26, 2012

With Christmas around the corner, it is my utter duty to inform you that a few days from now the countdown to Christmas 2013 will begin! You must hurry and buy a Christmas tree–if you haven’t already, find deals on the perfect presents, finish the do-it-yourself gifts you were so keen to start, and lastly listen to “Christmas Radio Pandora” before it is too late! Your dorm-mates may have enjoyed your Christmas Playlist on repeat throughout finals week, but when you return in January it will be an entirely different ball park. I assure you they will not be pleased if you are still jamming out to “Feliz Navidad” come January!

1. All I Want For Christmas Is You– Mariah Carey. This song wins for obvious reasons. One, Mariah Carey hits the notes magically. Two, the song appears in Generation Y’s favorite Christmas movie, Love Actually. How could you not fall in love with this song after watching Sam (Thomas Sangster) chase his love Joanna (Olivia Olson) to the airport to profess his love? Joanna sings All I Want For Christmas Is You on stage towards the end of the movie and shortly after all the love stories fall into place.

2. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas—Judy Garland. This song first appeared in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis and has since made an appearance in several other movies such as Sex and The City and The Family Stone. There is something about this song that makes you just want to run home and hug your mama. Maybe I’m the only one who feels this, but Judy Garland is a mother figure so that could explain it–especially since she reassures you that “From now on, our troubles will be out of sight.” So with that said, have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

3. Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. We all grew up with this song and wouldn’t know the name of all Santa’s reindeer without it. As a refresher: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixon, Comet, Cupid, Donnar, Blitzen, and the most famous reindeer of all… Rudolf.

4. White Christmas — Bing Crosby. Us Californians can really relate to this song, although it is highly unlikely, we can still dream of a white Christmas. This song reminds us of that. Regardless of what kind of Christmas you have—white, rainy, sunny, or gloomy—hot cocoa, your pajamas and a fire will always make you feel as though you’re enjoying a white Christmas indoors. Just remember to close the blinds.

5. Jingle Bell Rock — Bobby Helms. Mean Girls. Need I say more? Another movie that we grew up with; love it or hate it, Mean Girls is why you know all the lyrics to Jingle Bell Rock. Possibly the dance moves too… although you may be too shy to admit it.

6. Feliz Navidad — Jose Feliciano. This song wins spot #6 because it makes you want to dance the cha-cha. Not many Christmas songs can do that, hence why it puts a smile on so many faces. If the song doesn’t do it for you, then picturing a Latin Santa dancing around in a sombrero will. Remember when the dancing Santa’s were popular? Latin Santa dancing to Feliz Navidad was my families’ favorite.

7. Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire—Nat King Cole. This song is just beautiful. The final verse says “And so I’m offering this simple phrase, To kids from one to ninety-two, Although it has been said many times, many ways, A very Merry Christmas to you.” Everyone loves being referred to as a kid. Kids look forward to Christmas more than anyone and if you can be a kid at 92, a happy life you must have lived.

8. Last Christmas—Wham! This song is a classic. It tells a story about an old love. The singer has not seen her lover for a year and he has forgotten her. She includes a verse that says “Now I know what a fool I’ve been, but if you kissed me now I know you’d fool me again.” This verse is powerful because it touches a subject too many of us can relate to. Although someone close to you may hurt you time and time again, we often fall into the trap once more. Like the saying goes though, “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.” This song turns out to be optimistic in the end–as the main chorus (and the only part most people know) says “Last Christmas I gave you my heart but the very next day you gave it away, this year to save me from tears, I’ll give it to someone special.”

9. Santa Baby—Eartha Kitt. This song is a guilty pleasure of all of ours. While Christmas is not entirely about the gifts, this song mocks the materialism of Christmas. The singer flirts with Santa and hopes that he will get her a yacht, blue convertible, duplex, checks, decorations bought at Tiffany’s and a ring. It is a really silly song that you can’t help but love during the holidays!

10. Christmas–U2. This one is loved by everyone. U2 is a band that is recognized globally. Who hasn’t been away from a loved one before on Christmas? It is a terrible feeling and Christmas describes it well. “They’re singing deck the halls, but it’s not like Christmas at all, I remember when you were here and all the fun we had last year.”

Happy holidays from a student who will be playing Christmas songs up until the New Year! I hope these songs make it to your Christmas Playlist (if they are not there already) and that you are able to enjoy a wonderful holiday season among your loved ones—If you are not able to, listen to Christmas on repeat until they are back in your arms. Merry Christmas!
