Dance Your Heart Out: It's For the Kids

By Kelsey James on January 22, 2013

This past Saturday, the university and community of Davis came together to support a great cause: Children’s Miracle Network. The 8 hour dance event celebrates children’s battle against cancer. By staying on their feet all night, dancers represent the fight these children take part in every day.

In its first year, the event raised over $7,000. President Eddie Yoo feels relieved and accomplished, the event having been in the works for 2 years now. “It’s been quite a journey to get to this point,” Yoo said. Last year’s event was canceled due to a lack of funding.

Having attended the event myself, I can genuinely say that the Davis population was well represented. There were members from the Greek community, student government, academic honors societies, and children and families from the community.

Attractions such as Just Dance, hand massages, and food including PinkBerry also helped lead to a successful evening. Live bands and DJs continued throughout the event, keeping attendees moving the whole time. The impact and support from the community was evident.

One of the most special aspects of the event was the presence of “Miracle Families”. Families whose children have been affected by cancer were in attendance as proof of the community’s hard work and dedication to battling cancer with such events as Davis Dance Marathon.

Hopefully the event will continue to grow and expand throughout the upcoming years. Donations will be accepted until February 1st. All proceeds will go to the UC Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento.
