I took Greek and Roman history courses from Dr. Spyridakis back in the late 1960s and his courses were intersting and enjoyable. He had a good sense of humor and could poke fun, not in a mean way, to illustrate his points. One I remember was a reference to the nearby town of Lodi when he used the expression "Lodi debutants", but with the passage of time I have forgotten the context. One thing I will always respect him for was his sense of air play. He had been asked to give a talk before a group of conservative students and he was immediately attacked by the lefties on campus for doing this. He said that while he himself was a liberal, a left leaning individual, he did not appreciate the outrage by his fellow liberals as to him the University was to be an institution open to all ideas and thoughts. And to ignore or attempt to stifle those who disagree with your thoughts was anathema to that ideal. Great classes, interesting and enjoyable. Glad to see he's still at it. |
